Universal Pictures has given a prime summer release date of June 19, 2020, to Pete Davidson ’s untitled semi-autobiographical comedy from director Judd Apatow. The studio made the announcement Friday, three days after unveiling the project. The Universal Pictures film is written by Apatow, Davidson, and Dave Sirus. Davidson, who grew up in Staten Island, lost his firefighter father in the Sept. 11 attacks, started performing stand-up comedy at the age of 16, and joined the cast of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” in 2014 at age 20. Davidson’s coming-of-age film “Big Time Adolescence” premiered Monday at the Sundance Film Festival. Apatow will produce the pic for his Apatow Productions alongside Barry Mendel. They share producing credits on “The Big Sick, ” “Bridesmaids, ” “This Is 40, ” “Trainwreck, ” and “Funny People. ” Production will be starting this summer in New York City. The Davidson-Apatow movie is the second to land on the June 19, 2020, date. It joins an untitled Pixar movie. Universal Pictures also will release DreamWorks Pictures’ haunted-house thriller “The Turning” on Jan. 24, 2020. Based on the Henry James novella, the film is set in Maine and directed by Floria Sigismondi and stars Mackenzie Davis, Finn Wolfhard, Brooklynn Prince, and Joely Richardson. Lionsgate has already set its thriller “Run” for the same date.
January 30, 2019 10:17 AM ET Pete Davidson is set to star in a major film from Judd Apatow. The Hollywood Reporter reported the following details late Tuesday afternoon: Judd Apatow is returning to the world of feature filmmaking. Apatow, who hasn’t directed a studio or narrative feature since 2015’s Amy Schumer hit Trainwreck, is teaming with Pete Davidson for an untitled comedy. … Sources say the project sees Apatow doing for Davidson what he did for Schumer with Trainwreck, giving a platform for a rising comedian to play a version of themselves on a stage built with material from their own lives. I know plenty of people will want to trash this movie before we even see it, but I actually do find Apatow and Davidson to both be very entertaining. Let’s not forget that Apatow is the genius behind “Knocked Up” and “The 40-Year Old Virgin. ” The man knows comedy. (RELATED: People Need To Relax About Pete Davidson’s Daniel Crenshaw Joke) As for Davidson, I know he took some serious heat for his Daniel Crenshaw joke, but let’s not pretend he’s not talented. He’s on “ SNL ” and is only 25. That’s a pretty awesome accomplishment. Now, is there any guarantee that this unnamed movie turns out to be a hit? Obviously, not but the necessary pieces for success are in place. (RELATED: Daniel Crenshaw Drops The Mic On People Easily Offended About ‘SNL’ Joke) If the film is even a fraction as funny as some of Apatow’s other work, then it’s going to be worth seeing. Apatow’s vision for the film has been compared to Amy Schumer’s “Trainwreck, " giving Davidson a chance to play a version of himself to tell his story through dramatized experiences. He’s got quite the story to tell: Davidson’s hero father, Scott Davidson, a firefighter, fell victim to the 9/11 attacks. Along with a very public break up with Ariana Grande, Davidson has openly battled with depression and mental illness for years. Apatow and Davidson made their way to Staten Island in February to scout film locations. The comedian was seen in Elm Park, where residents reportedly received letters stating the “neighborhood is an area of interest for a new film project. " The letter included a timeline for the project: “Shoot dates are TBD Summer. We are expecting production to last 1-2 months. Depending on the final script, we would be looking to shoot on your property for approximately 1-3 weeks. ” Throughout the summer, the production has filmed at Ralph’s Ices, Denino’s Pizzeria & Tavern, Rosebank Pizza and at a home on Lake Avenue in Mariners Harbor. Davidson, who hails from Great Kills, is joined on this project with fellow comedian Ricky Velez, Marisa Tomei, Bill Burr, Moisés Arias, Steve Buscemi, Machine Gun Kelly and Maude Apatow, Judd’s daughter and star of HBO’s “Euphoria. Edit Storyline Scott has been a case of arrested development ever since his firefighter father died when he was seven. He's now reached his mid-20s having achieved little, chasing a dream of becoming a tattoo artist that seems far out of reach. As his ambitious younger sister heads off to college, Scott is still living with his exhausted ER nurse mother and spends his days smoking weed, hanging with the guys - Oscar, Igor and Richie - and secretly hooking up with his childhood friend Kelsey.
